Hard-Mount or Soft-Mount, What’s The Difference?

Whats the difference between hard and soft mount commercial washers?

At Speed Queen, we take pride in offering top-notch solutions for commercial laundry challenges. We understand that with a wide range of options available, it can be overwhelming for those who aren’t laundry experts. That’s why we want to shed some light on the common choices found in our products. Let’s start by discussing the difference between hard mount and soft mount machines.

What is hard mount and soft mount?

When commercial washing machines spin, they generate significant centrifugal forces. Managing these forces is crucial to prevent the washer from vibrating excessively. Hard mounting involves securing the machine to a solid floor, typically made of thick concrete. Through the use of bolts and grout, the washer is firmly fixed to the floor, as shown in the image below. Although this restricts the placement options for hard mount washers, their simple, durable design has made them a reliable choice for years.

On the other hand, soft mount machines work differently. They incorporate a suspension system within the machine’s frame to absorb vibrations, similar to how a car’s suspension smooths out the ride. This means they don’t require a solid concrete floor for installation. Soft mount machines can spin at higher speeds, resulting in shorter wash cycles and reduced costs over time. However, due to the additional engineering and components involved, they are more expensive to purchase compared to hard mount washers.

So, how does this distinction affect you?

Here are some key differences between the two types of machines:

Hard Mount Machine:

  • Lower upfront costs
  • Slower spin cycles reduce the risk of damaging delicate laundry items
  • Higher moisture retention compared to soft mount machines
  • More complex installation process (restricted to ground floor installation)

Soft Mount Machine:

  • Operates more efficiently when loaded correctly
  • Simple installation (can be installed anywhere)
  • Higher spin speed, leading to lower moisture retention and faster drying
  • Higher initial cost

At Speed Queen, we aim to provide the necessary information to help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and requirements.
