A New Look For An Old Laundromat

Jun 1, 2023

Laundromats play a vital role in the lives of many people, but all too often, they are perceived as dull or uninspiring. However, we believe that laundromats can be so much more, which is why we offer a design service to create bright and visually appealing new builds.

Taking this idea to an entirely new level, London-based artist Yinka Ilori recently partnered with Lego and local children in East London to challenge the notion that laundromats are mundane spaces. He created a “Launderette of Dreams,” a unique art installation that combines the layout of a traditional laundromat with a children’s playground.

Ilori’s imaginative design transformed the laundromat from a plain space into a vibrant and captivating environment. Using over 200,000 Lego bricks, which serve as both toys and structural elements, the exhibit encourages the idea that laundromats can be places for community engagement, play, and shared experiences, beyond just doing laundry. The design includes traditional play spaces like hopscotch floors, as well as a distinctive Lego mural wall for visitors to interact with.

Unfortunately, the “Launderette of Dreams” is not a functioning laundromat, but rather an art exhibition. However, Ilori’s inspiration for the project came from his own childhood memories of playing at his local laundromat while waiting for his parents to finish their laundry. He believes that seemingly mundane spaces like laundromats can play a crucial role in bringing communities together, fostering interactions between people of different cultures and backgrounds, and providing opportunities for kids to meet, play, and share ideas.

So why should you care about this artistic endeavour? In short, we understand the impact that a well-designed laundromat can have on a community. We are not suggesting that every laundromat needs to undergo a complete renovation with bright primary colours, slides, or monkey bars, but there may be potential to enhance the customer experience in various ways. A pleasant and inviting laundromat is likely to attract more traffic and usage from new customers in a wider area. This could be achieved through simple and cost-effective improvements like better seating options, additional folding tables, or improved air-conditioning, or even more ambitious renovations inspired by Ilori’s innovative project.
